Free Throw Competition

In January the kids of St. Thomas More School and Chapel Hill neighboring schools gather on the parish grounds to throw hoops. They are just warming up for March Madness when everyone gets a chance to see some of the greatest basketball played right here in Chapel Hill.

Are you ready to join us this year?  It is easy and there is no registration or signup fee of any kind.  We take care of that and our local community sponsors provide the prizes.

Here is the story of an earlier event with a video.
It will tell you more about the program.
Our kids love basketball.  This year competition was held outside on a misty Saturday morning with temperatures in the 30’s, but the kids came to show their stuff.  They signed in and then took their turn at throwing the basketball through the hoop.  The outdoor hoop had a distinct resonation to it.  When a ball hit that backboard, it would shake and make it hard for the ball to bounce more than once.  If you were impatient and took your next shot too fast (before the backboard had a chance to stop vibrating), you had better be a crack shot.  The kids did not seem to mind, as this is the what they do day in and day out as they face neighborhood backboards mounted on posts, garage eaves, or a mobile basketball hoop.

Our knights enjoy this opportunity to work with the local kids.  We watch them and marvel at their determination and enthusiasm.  Our minds go back to our youth when we tossed hoops and dreamed great things.  Today it is our turn to give our kids a chance to dream great things.  They are our future and we are building family.
